The search for an affordable electro-acoustic guitar can be a frustrating one. Over the last few decades, the market has been flooded with cheaply produced, poor-quality electro-acoustics that are barely worth the pittance they cost to buy. Oh sure, with a little tinkering and some adjustment to the action you can make them halfway playable, but there’s not a lot you can do about those cheap, crackly pick-ups.
Of course, the X6C/ACE Mystique from Baton Rouge is nothing like those guitars and that’s why we’re here to talk about it today. Can this electro-acoustic bridge the gap between affordability and quality?
The Baton Rouge X6C/ACE Mystique is a great guitar to look at. With its BR-2P pickup, slim nut, solid cedar top, and mahogany body, this guitar really does have a beautiful aesthetic, but how does it sound?
Known for its sparkly treble and defined bass, cedar is a durable wood that’s perfect for percussive, fingerstyle players. Baton Rouge were clearly thinking along these lines when they chose the pickup. The BR-2P is designed to identify even the most subtle percussive playing across the entire guitar.
Although it will certainly serve nicely for more general players, it will always work best for that more acoustic, finger-plucked sound.
So we know the X6C/ACE Mystique sounds good, but is it really worth the price?
Well, this guitar retails at around $700 which certainly puts it in a competitive range for intermediate-level guitars. Now, there are certainly cheaper guitars out there but they tend to be more beginner-focused instruments. For anyone past the basic chords and scales stage, you’ll want an instrument that really compliments the nuances of your play. For that, you won’t find much better than the X6C/ACE Mystique.
It really is a great instrument at an affordable price.
