If there’s one thing Joyo are great for it’s their entry-level pedals. By offering a high-quality product and a very affordable price, they’ve made a name for themselves as a great brand to take newer players from beginner to expert without having to pay premium prices. While these pedals lack for some of the subtlety you might expect in more expensive brands, they’re sturdy, well built and most importantly, they’re a one-stop-shop for getting a nice sound on a budget.
In true Joyo style, the JF-36 Sweet Baby Overdrive is a beginner’s overdrive that’s well worth the money. Providing the kind of effect you’d expect from a pedal twice its price, the Sweet Baby is the sound of ’60s made easy, and what’s not to love about that?
Joyo have certainly kept the layout simple and that’s a good thing if you’re looking to learn how to get the best out of an overdrive. After all, before you can understand the finer points of EQs and Gain Boosts, you need to know the basics.
Anyway, it works for Boss, so why not Joyo?
At the end of the day, there’s not much to say about this pedal except that it’s great for what it is. If you’re an experienced guitarist looking for a more advanced sound on a budget then we’d recommend skipping over this one and checking Behringer, but if you want a good sound that’s easy to control then the Sweet Baby could well be the pedal for you. It’s not quite pro-level quality, but it would certainly pass for pro in a pinch.
Of course, there’s no need to take our word for it. You can listen to this pedal and more right here on TonePedia, for a truly unbiased sound review.
